Fabricated or Induced Illness

This BBC news covers 2 cases of families where undiagnosed illness were wrongly categorised as fabricated or induced illness. A key factor in this is local policies which do not:

  1. Acknowledge the harms done by over-classification and unwarranted suspicion
  2. Have a clear definition of what constitutes FII in a safeguarding context and seek to broaden the group to which this applies
  3. Recognise the very low incidence of FII
  4. Show an understanding of the problems of diagnosis particularly in relation to rare illnesses and multi-system disorders
